Creating Buzz with Blogs

Fundamentally, a blog is a tool.  But what makes it really nice… others produce your content.  While I’m standing here talking, other people are coming to my site and they are actually adding comments.  What does that do?  The page that they add a comment on has become fresher and it has gained more content.  So what does that mean?  The search engines then re-index that page and is saying, “Hey, there’s cool new stuff.  Great!  Let’s make sure this continues to be really well ranked.”

And how much did I have to do?  Nothing… nothing.

I’m standing here;   I’m going on a plane in a beach in Hawaii; I’m going hanging out with my family in a museum for a day and I come back and there are twenty new comments on my site.  Other people are doing the work to help me be more findable so that my business gains more visibility so that I can sell my products or services or just offer up a service.

There are influencers and there are people that are influenced.  And it might be you telling your friends, “I just saw this movie, it stunk!  Don’t go.  It’s just totally not worth it.”  Now they don’t go.  That’s word-of-mouth marketing.  But, I will suggest to you that it’s really more like a pyramid because those influencers have influence – and they have influencers.  So if you can figure out the food chain, and you can figure out those small number of people that are right on top of that pyramid, then what that means is, for relatively little effort, if you can identify those people, you can influence a vast number of people.

And so another really key concept here in this sort of 2.0 Web World is to look at those influencers, try to identify those influencers, and then try to get in good with them - big, big concept.   What you really need to do to really establish some buzz in this modern internet world, is you need to be able to become the heart of someone else’s little universe for at least long enough that you can contribute something of value.

Now, instead of saying, “Well, this is a long-term six month to one year strategy before you see any benefit,” I’m saying, “You could do this right now and by the end of today’s task, in the radars."

Dave Taylor - Day 10

Secret Classroom Dave Taylor

Dave Taylor has been involved with the Internet since it was just a dirt path in the woods: he first connected to the net in 1980. Since then he has been involved with the development and popularization of the network through his work as a research scientist at HP's R&D Labs, four different startups he founded, twenty business and technical books and innumerable publications in magazines and newspapers.

Dave holds a bachelors degree in Computer Science, a Masters in Educational Computing and an MBA, and has received a variety of academic and professional honors in his 25 year career. He has also served as a business advisor to startups, venture capital firms and local government agencies, and currently advises a variety of companies on an ongoing basis.

He has been involved with the world of blogs and blogging since 2003 and his AskDaveTaylor.com tech support site receives almost one million unique visitors each month. He also runs a highly-regarded business blog that has been cited in many prestigious publications ranging from the Wall Street Journal to the New York Times and BusinessWeek. A well-known and award-winning public speaker, Dave frequently talks about blogs and social networking to audiences large and small, co-hosted the Blog Business Summit in 2006 and is chairman of the Blog World Expo later this year in Las Vegas, Nevada.
